Weeks Later

Weeks had passed before I finally got a clean bill of health from Abe's friend Jody gave me a clean bill of health. I'd only developed a short-lived wound infection from my inability to sit still for too long and pulling at the annoying little buggers each time I would sneak into the gym to go a few rounds with the speed bag, refusing to let myself lose any of my strength or agility due to a poorly timed gunshot wound.

The time for me to leave and return home was drawing closer and closer but I kept finding trivial things to do to keep me in New York, one such thing being the grocery shopping trip with Abe that turned into an utter disaster. Aside from the man having the worse chef skills I'd ever come across; he was also not the best at taking helpful (as far as I was concerned) suggestions as to what to buy for his kitchen. That excursion had ended in mutual silence and bags of canned goods, Ramen noodles, and other easy-fix meals being unloaded with a not-quite-tense silence.

Despite all that, I found Abe's company amiable. And it beat being back in New Orleans in my apartment alone, scouring the dark web for more jobs.

With that thought in mind, I zipped up my bag and left it on the foot of the bed before leaving the room I'd been using to go hunt out Abe. I could hear him in the gym, the sound of his hits to the heavy bag echoing like shotgun fire up the stairway as I descended.

I stood just inside the door, watching as the man worked. His back to me, I could tell he'd already heard my arrival but was too focused on what he was doing or was waiting for me to say something first.

"My flight's in the morning. Early. I was just wanting to check in with you before I headed out. Have you had any other opportunities come in? Not entirely sure I'm ready to go home and take it easy. You know how well I do with that."

I laughed; arms folded across my chest. I gave him a couple of heartbeats to answer but then decided perhaps he hadn't heard me. He was going pretty heavy at the bag, like the thing was an enemy and he needed to take it out for good.

"You still with me here, boss?"
